WALTER McGOWAN vs. SALVATORE BURRUNI (2) Site*

Description : Here we have an original super rare official onsite boxing fight poster for the WBC* world flyweight championship title bout. Wembley Empire Pool, Wembley, London, England, 14th June 1966.

Walter McGowan, 23-year-old Scot gained his revenge over Salvatore Burruni of Italy after losing a disputed points decision for the EBU title 2 years earlier in Rome. This time round McGowan gained revenge when stripped Burruni* of disputed world flyweight boxing title winning by points decision.

McGowan left-jabbed in the early rounds and survived a vicious cut over his right eye in the middle of the fight. The 15-rounder, before about 6,000 at London's Indoor Wembley Stadium, saw McGowan covered in blood from the cut in the last round. At times he tried to wipe the blood out of his eyes and it poured down the right side of his face. But he still boxed his way out of trouble against the 33-year-old Italian.

*Mr L. Spota, the president of the World Boxing Council, said in Mexico City that the WBC did not recognise last night's fight between McGowan and Burruni as the world flyweight championship. The WBC disqualified Burruni as champion in November 65 when he failed to meet its time limit for giving his mandatory challenger Hiroyuki Ebihara (Japan) his shot the title.
